Dim Lights with Paper More Economical and Simple

There are many types of LED lights available with different power, color temperature and shapes. In terms of application scenes, LED lights can also be subdivided into restaurant lighting, led supermarket lighting, gallery lighting, office lighting, retail store lighting, etc.  However, sometimes we need to dim the LED lights to achieve a more comfortable lighting effect. Overly bright LED lights can cause glare and discomfort, so we need a simple and easy way to adjust the brightness of LED lights.

Common LED dimming methods include using energy-saving dimmers, smart dimming switches, whole-scene dimming panels, etc. These dimming devices can effectively control the brightness between 0-100% and realize the demand for multi-area control of different core components separately. However, these dimming devices are not cheap and also increase the installation cost to some extent.

In addition to professional dimming devices, we can also use some simple means to adjust the brightness of LED lights, such as sticking a layer of light filter on the LED lights or installing a light shield outside the LED lights. This article focuses on how to use paper to dim the brightness of LED lights.

Material and Step:

Dimming lights with paper is a simple and practical method.

  1. First, choose paper with a certain light transmittance, thick white paper is the most ideal. The thicker the paper, the better the light-blocking effect.
  2. Then, cut the paper according to the size of the light source to be blocked. If blocking a wall sconce or pendant light, part or all of the lamp body can be blocked.
  3. Fix the cut paper pieces in front of the light source with clips or glue, and adjust the blocking angle and position of the paper pieces to achieve the ideal brightness effect. If it is a wall lamp, blocking at a 45-degree angle usually achieves the best effect. You can also stack multiple layers of paper to increase the light blocking effect.
  4. Using timing switches for automatic on/off can provide more convenience. During the day, timed automatic off can be set to save energy. Before going to bed at night, timed automatic off lighting can also be set.
  5. Regularly check if the blocking objects are loose.

Although dimming with paper is a simple method, safety must also be noticed. Do not block heat sources for a long time. It is best to use non-flammable paper materials. Once the paper is damaged, it should be replaced in time. At the same time, good ventilation must be ensured to prevent fire, and regularly check each light-blocking device to ensure safety.

Some common paper materials suitable for reducing lamp brightness:

1. Parchment paper: Parchment paper is a traditional light-absorbing material with moderate thickness, good light transmittance and softness. Placing it on the outside of the lampshade can effectively reduce the brightness without affecting the light quality.

2. Aluminum foil paper: Aluminum foil paper has strong light-shielding effect and good insulation. If you need to significantly reduce the brightness, you can choose aluminum foil paper. The downside is that it may impact the color temperature of the light.

3. Blotting paper: Blotting paper also has a light-shielding effect and a thicker texture. Placing it inside the lampshade can reduce most of the brightness with little effect on the color temperature. However, it is prone to high-temperature scorching of the lamp on the paper, so fire prevention is required.

4. Cleaning tissue: Cleaning tissue has a delicate and smooth texture and general light-shielding effect. It is more suitable for decorative lighting that requires soft brightness. It can be placed outside or inside the lampshade with minimal impact on light color.

5. Kraft paper: Kraft paper is also a traditional commonly used paper with moderate thickness and light-shielding effect. More importantly, it is affordable. It is very economical and practical as a light-shielding material inside and outside the lampshade. In addition, there are various professional light-shielding fabrics and papers available on the market, but the price will be relatively higher. The above common paper materials, while reducing the brightness of the lamp, also have a certain decorative effect. You can choose flexibly according to actual needs and lamp style.

In Short

Dimming lights with paper is a simple, practical and cost-effective lighting design method. However, during use, all kinds of safety factors must be considered, and regular inspection and maintenance must be carried out so that it can be used long-term.
